Inspiration: Brazilian Cities Against OOH

OOH, in agency language, means out-of-home. These constitute the giant billboards and outdoor advertising. OOH is probably the first thing you will notice when driving around the city of Metro Manila. There is a massive amount of giant billboards scattered every thoroughfare. And I mean massive.

Every single time a big storm comes, these billboard spreads come down. I guess for fear of falling giant steel structures that support the tarps (or whatever material they use for these ads) when strong winds blow.

I think that, in general, billboards just contribute to visual pollution. The photos above show what is left of the outdoor ads when they were all rolled down during a storm. Can you just imagine Manila with all these structures wrapped with advertisements? What about Manila without these steel trusses on top of buildings?

Don't get me wrong; I am not against advertising. After all, I worked in an ad agency for almost 5 years. I just think that ad agencies should be pushed to create visually pleasant and stimulating advertisements that will help beautify a city.

There seems to be hope.

Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are two cities in Brazil that have already implemented laws on banning outdoor advertising -- not just billboards, but all ads that can be seen by everyone including those that you see on public transportation.

It can be done. At first, of course there would be backlash. There will be fear of job loss, revenue decrease, etcetera, etcetera. Where will businesses advertise then? Well, let the creatives deal with that. They should think out of the box. They can go digital, or do art instead like what BBDO did for GE in Sao Paulo.

Wouldn't it be a great deal if Metro Manila were to be defined by its surroundings, its architecture, its cleanliness, and not sheets of out-of-home advertisements? I think there's a lot more to Metro Manila than billboards.

Manila, a clean city. What a wonderful statement. Sigh, one can only wish.

Crafts/DIY: Starbucks Make-Your-Own Tumbler Design

We got this tumbler for my dad from Starbucks and personalized it with a photo of him and Allie.

You can change the design of the insert inside the tumbler and make it your own. The downside? I didn't find any readily available template from the Starbucks website.

So, what I did was I scanned the insert so that it would be to size, and manipulated the design in Photoshop. Below is the final product.

Kind of blurry, but you get the point. :)
I did one for you, my dear readers. I think it's very Kate Spade-ish. Download the actual size from this link.

Home: Reminiscing the Home

Sigh, I miss our small condo in the US. When we left, we sold most of our furniture. I miss my Crate and Barrel buffet table, and the office desk too. I miss our dining set. I miss everything.

Food: Sugar Kisses Cupcakes

I am a red velvet cupcake fan. Back in the states, I have been loyal to a cupcake boutique that sells the most amazing cupcakes ever. Sadly, I have to let my obsession go when we moved back to the Asian tropics.

Last weekend, during Project Happy's bazaar at the new Megatent, I got to taste a little piece of heaven from Sugar Kisses by busyoven.

Oh. Em. Gee. Their red velvet cupcakes ("Red Butler") are to die for. I have found myself a red velvet cupcake favorite here in Manila, and I don't get amazed easily.

The cake is moist and soft. The cream cheese icing is not too sweet. It is just perfect. I swear, you will not be disappointed.

Here are some of their other cupcakes -- all named ever so cute ("Charlie Brown", peanut butter cupcake topped with ChocNut. "Bugs Bunny", carrot cupcake. "Mr. Brightside", quezo de bola cupcake... and others.)

Food: Gelato, Gelato, Gelato

My sister and I went out the other day to watch The Dark Knight Rises at Trinoma. It was my second time to watch, and her first. Every time you buy a movie ticket at Trinoma, you get a Gelatissimo BOGO coupon. So naturally, after the movie, we decided to get some gelato at Gelatissimo. Gelato is Italian ice cream. It is different from regular ice cream that we know of in a sense that gelato has no air added in, and that it has less fat.

You can get a free taste of Gelatissimo's flavors. Hmm, if you're kapal or kuripot, you can ask for a sample of each flavor. Kaya lang kakahiya. LOL. Our all-time favorite flavor is Roasted Almond. This time, we wanted to try something else. We ended up getting a scoop of their new flavor -- Lemon Cheesecake (super yum), and another scoop of Pistachio.

They were SOOO good. I {heart} you Gelatissimo. Thank you for existing!
